Justine Perry is a French Techno DJ and Producer based in Berlin, Germany. She’s a resident DJ at event space Kalt in Strasbourg (France), part of the Résilience crew in Paris, and is known for playing memorable sets all around Europe at not just events but also parties like Ki/Ki (Tbilisi), Mess (Paris), Spectrum (Paris), and Pax Romana (Amsterdam).

Justine embraces the need of building diversity and a safer environment in music. Proposing a timeless sound of fast-paced, deep and trippy grooves, she’s established herself in the Paris dance club scene, playing in clubs like Berghain, Khidi, Tresor, ∄ (K41), Rex Club, Radion, IFZ, or the old Griessmühle in Berlin.

She also graced many of the most prominent radio shows Europe has to offer like Red Light Radio Amsterdam, HÖR Berlin, or Rinse FM and has released music on labels like DNC Limited, Postdynamic or Unknown Movements.

We recently had a chance to interview Justine about her journey as a DJ. Check out what she had to say below about her journey!

How did you start your career as an artist?

In 2017, I started to play music and at the end of this same year I got my first gig. I started in Paris, with a Pioneer DJ controller, shortly after I upgraded my stuff and bought digital decks, since then I never stopped.

What do you want to convey with your music?

I want to give emotions, I want to let people abandon themselves, to feel good. I want also to give people the possibility to reflect. Music is not just about going to a club and dance, it’s also to reflect. Music is a powerful path for your thoughts and ideas to see the light. The great thing with techno is also that you don’t have lyrics that explain a story like in pop, rock or other styles, so you don’t have to identify yourself through lyrics and to identify your story to the lyrics. You create your own story in your brain, you are free. I reflect so much on myself when I go to a club and listen to some artists. It’s a kind of therapy and it can open doors in your brain, new ideas and help you make decisions in your life. At least for me. It helps me understand myself.

What motivates you?

Sharing. Always give more and try to be better, to see people happy, to feel communion.

Who inspires you in the field of music, fashion, and design?

Nowadays I’m back to listening to Max Cooper, all the discography is superb. I started to listen electronica also. It’s inspiring.

About design, I discovered the work of Arne Jacobsen. I like the modernity and simplicity of his work. It is very straight forward in terms of design, functionality. I like simplicity. It’s very raw in away, ahead of its time. I love that he ventured further than architecture and did some timeless product design. The concept of creating a project from floor to ceiling, as you want it to be, it is quite close to what I aspire for my music.

In terms of fashion, I started to collaborate with Vertere, a Berlin based contemporary fashion brand, founded, and run by a collective of local DJs and designers. They have really nice design, and the quality of their products is good, organic cotton, and they are sustainable and eco-conscious. This aspect is important for me.

What are your next challenges?

I’d like to release an EP, one day at some point. The process of learning how to produce is long for me but I believe. Next challenge would be to get a booking in a big German festival such as Fusion, or Nation of Gondwana, or Melt. I’d also like to play at Fabric one day.
